Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Intelligence Committee Chair Senator Richard Burr introduced S. 1035 last night. The bill reauthorizes Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act—the provision used by the NSA to collect innocent Americans' everyday calling records—until 2020.
EFF strongly opposes such a "clean" reauthorization. We urge users to tell Senator McConnell and their Senators to end mass surveillance under the Patriot Act, not renew it. That's why we launched Fight215.org, a coalition with over 34 organizations from across the political spectrum to end mass surveillance under the Patriot Act.
The unconstitutional bulk collection of phone records must end now. And EFF vigorously opposes any clean reauthorization the Senate Intelligence Committee or Senate Majority Leader may propose like S. 1035.
