Christoph Schmon

International Policy Director

Christoph Schmon is EFF’s International Policy Director. He leads the organization’s international policy strategy to make sure that digital rights are respected and enforced beyond the United States borders. Christoph has deep expertise in EU policymaking and represents EFF’s advocacy for a free internet and online privacy before European lawmakers in Brussels. He also works on UK policy developments and broader international regulatory issues affecting digital rights and technology policy.

Christoph specializes in tech-policy and digital rights, focusing on the impact of legislation on freedom of expression, innovation, and privacy. His recent work focuses on digital markets and platform regulation, as well as evolving legislative initiatives on AI, age verification and encryption. Christoph is active in European Commission expert groups in Brussels, works with international coalitions on global policy issues, and regularly speaks at international conferences and policy events. He also lectures at universities. 

In addition to leading international policy and advocacy efforts, Christoph brings extensive strategic litigation experience, including successful amicus interventions before European courts, and holds a Ph.D. in law.

Prior to working with EFF, he headed the Consumer Rights Team at the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), overseeing legal policy efforts on consumer protection and digital regulation. Earlier in his career, he practiced as an associate attorney at a leading law firm and was a researcher at universities.
