Data Cooperatives: An attempt towards more autonomy in a data dependent society
From the Organizers:
Data is a profitable resource that powerful entities mine and siphon every day. This includes personal financial information, medical and biological information, geo-location, psychological information, behavioral and anything else that can be recorded. More and more aspects of our lives are being digitized, the data being passed around allowing companies and other entities with power to know more about us than our most intimate comrades. How might we maintain autonomy in the face of this non-stop harvest of the many aspects of our being? Data Cooperatives may be the answer.
Our speaker this month is David Hensley. An Austin native that uses philosophy, comics and literature to navigate the growing absurdity of the ever evolving human condition, David's said navigation is through the rebellion of knowledge. Having studied hackivist movements, blown whistles and other such events, David aims to help synthesize a path to progress that's accessible to all and that will be paved along cyberspace and the electronic frontier.
Talk will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/user/austintechlive and will later be archived at https://www.youtube.com/user/effaustin. Questions for the speaker from virtual attendees may be submitted via the Youtube livestream chat, our Twitter account, @EFFaustin, our Mastodon account, @effaustin, or our Bluesky account, @effaustin.bsky.social.
