Over the last few years, EFF Director of Engineering Alexis Hancock has been researching the many innovative ways Black communities have been fighting against mass surveillance, from the days of chattel slavery until the modern Black Lives Matter movement. This important history of codes, ciphers, underground telecommunications and even dance became one of 2021’s most popular blog posts.

Earlier this year, in partnership with the Nib, illustrator Chelsea Saunders worked with Alexis to transform that research into Coded Resistance, a comic telling the same riveting story in a visual format.

We hope you enjoy Insider Briefing #9, a behind-the-scenes sit-down with Alexis as she discusses how her research came to be, and how it connects to her current work at EFF encrypting networks with Let’s Encrypt and Certbot.
