EFF Senior Staff Attorney Aaron Mackey has been a lawyer with EFF since 2015. He works on a variety of cases dealing with free speech, anonymity, privacy, and government surveillance, including the recent Supreme Court case, Van Buren v. United States.
In Van Buren v. United States, a former Georgia police officer who was wrongly convicted under the notoriously vague Computer Fraud and Abuse Act ("CFAA") asked the Supreme Court to reject a dangerously overbroad interpretation of the law. Aaron was part of the legal team who wrote multiple briefs encouraging the Court to take the case and urging it to make clear that violating terms of service is not a crime under the CFAA. In this Insider Briefing, he discusses EFF's history fighting against the overuse of the CFAA and how Van Buren is a win for all internet users.
