As reproductive rights come under attack in the United States and other countries around the world, it is vital that people have access to accurate abortion information–especially online. Reproductive health and rights organizations use online platforms to provide crucial and sometimes life-saving guidance directly to those in need, including those in locations where abortion is difficult to access.
Yet over the past several years, there has been a sharp increase in reports of social media platforms removing or suppressing abortion-related content, even when no law requires platforms to do so. Limiting access to abortion-related information erodes basic principles of free expression: it silences conversations about vital healthcare options, undermines personal autonomy, and prevents communities from engaging in open dialogue about reproductive health.
In response to this troubling trend, EFF has partnered with the Repro Uncensored coalition to call attention to examples of reproductive health and rights content that have been removed or suppressed by major social media companies—often without clear communication about why it violates platform policies. Together, we are working to hold these platforms accountable for their practices.
Help us spread the word. We’re collecting stories from people who have had their abortion-related content taken down, shadowbanned, or otherwise suppressed by Big Tech platforms. If you’re able to spend five minutes reporting your experience, the Repro Uncensored coalition will do our best to help. We will also use these stories to demand that companies end their censorship and offer much-needed transparency when they make moderation decisions.
While social media platforms have the right to moderate content in line with their policies, the suppression of legal information about reproductive rights has become alarmingly common. Organizations advocating for reproductive health and rights, as well as influencers and creators, frequently report having their content removed from platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. This often occurs under the guise of “community guidelines” violations, even when the content does not actually breach any rules.
Removed content often includes vital information such as guidance on accessing abortion pills, links to resources supporting individuals in states with abortion bans, and detailed explanations of the WHO’s protocol for safe abortion care. While this issue is particularly pronounced in the United States, it reflects a broader, global threat to freedom of information, disproportionately affecting individuals in regions where reproductive rights are already under attack.
